This year Spode celebrates the 200th anniversary of Josiah
Spode's creation of fine bone china. Josiah Spode was born in
Stoke-on-Trent in 1733. As well as perfecting blue underglaze printing in 1784,
he is credited with the most significant development in the history
of his industry: the formula for fine bone china.
The crowning accolade was gaining the first of
the company's six Royal Warrants following a factory visit by the
Prince of Wales in 1806.
Now 200 years later, fine bone china is still
being produced from that same site in Stoke-on-Trent.
